At home resources #12

Book suggestions:

Younger Students:

Do you know the Narhwal and Jelly books? They are very popular at Lawrence School.

Here are two videos from Ben Clanton, the author and illustrator of those books. The first video is a birthday story that has never been published...what do you get a cactus for its' birthday??? The second video shows Mr. Clanton in his studio. He reads a bit from the books and explains how he got the idea for the series: http://www.benclanton.com/p/videos.html The fifth book comes out in September.

Middle Grade Students

Prairie Lotus
Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park
Hanna is a girl living in middle America in 1880. She is excited to attend school finally after living in several newly settled towns that didn't have a school. Attending school is more complicated for her because she's the only half-Chinese student in the school, but she's determined to get a formal education even if it means finding ways to fight racist attitudes of her classmates. Meanwhile her dad is building a shop in town that will sell material for making clothes and Hanna hopes to finish school so she can work beside him as a seamstress. Beautifully written and well-edited, this is a short book that packs a lot into 200 or so pages. Fans of Little House on the Prairie will enjoy reading about another experience in that same time and place.

Older students

Loot by Jude Watson (2014-06-24)

Twelve year old March McQuin is dealing with a lot of changes: his father, an infamous jewel thief, has just plummeted to his death off a roof, he finds out about a twin sister he never knew he had, and he senses that someone is following him. March finds clues that his father left him and decides to follow the clues and steal the jewels that his father had left on his to-do list. This will give him and his new-found sister enough money to stay out of the foster care system and be free to live whereever they'd like to live. Fast paced chapters, with new twists and turns on every page. There is a sequel called Sting.
