Book suggestions:
Younger students:
Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton
A shark and a train compete in a series of contests on a seesaw, in hot air balloons, bowling, shooting baskets, playing hide-and-seek, and more. If you like this book you might also like the Who Would Win nonfiction series by Jerry Pallotta.
Middle grade students:
Knights vs. Dinosaurs by Matt Phelan
The knights of King Arthur's roundtable are bored. They're losing their skills and have run out of challenges fighting dragons. So Merlin the wizard comes up with a new challenge--he uses magic to make some dinosaurs appear for the knights to practice with! The author has followed this book up with Knights vs. Monsters and Knights vs. The End. Great for anyone who loves humor, adventure and great illustrations!
Older students:
Deep Water by Watt Key
When her father falls ill, twelve-year-old Julie Sims must take over and lead two of his clients on a dive miles off the coast of Alabama while her father stays behind in the boat. When the clients, a reckless boy Julie's age and his equally foolhardy father, disregard Julie's instructions during the dive, she quickly realizes she's in over her head. Literally. The three of them end up drifting away from the boat and out in the middle of the ocean with no help in sight. Action-packed.
